Fluoride Treatment

At Alderwood Children’s Dentistry, our dentists work with essential pediatric dental care for children throughout the Lynnwood area. Fluoride treatments can prevent the onset of cavities and help protect your child’s enamel from future dental problems. Our team is here to care for our diverse community and give every child a healthy, lasting smile.

What To Expect From Pediatric Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments protect the tooth’s enamel from plaque and acid build-up, protecting your child’s teeth from decay. Fluoride strengthens the teeth and makes them resistant to bacteria and acids, and fluoride treatments can be used as a preventative measure and treatment option for children with unhealthy enamel.

With regular fluoride treatments at Alderwood Children’s Dentistry, your child will be set to have strong teeth for life. When you schedule a visit with our office, we offer multiple options for fluoride treatments, including:

  • Sodium Fluoride Varnish: Fluoride varnish is a safe method for preventing tooth decay in children, lowering the risk of plaque development, and strengthening the teeth. Children can be treated as soon as their first milk teeth appear. The American Dental Association recommends that children receive fluoride varnishes at least two to four times a year. Their teeth are painted with varnish with a quick coat during their appointment. The coat will have a pleasant, fruity taste and smell and sets quickly once applied.
  • Silver Diamine Fluoride: Silver Diamine Fluoride is an FDA-approved topical solution that reduces tooth sensitivity and treats cavities. Silver acts as an anti-microbial agent that kills and prevents bacteria from forming. The fluoride component prevents the enamel from softening and losing mineral absorption. It’s considered an effective method for preventing further decay and is a simple, non-invasive way of treating cavities.

During treatment, the protective coating is applied only to the teeth showing cavities. Only small amounts are needed to help protect the teeth, and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check the cavity area for signs of improvement. Fluoride varnishes can also be applied after the treatment to further prevent cavities on the affected tooth.

Both options are considered excellent sources for your child’s fluoride requirements, and our team is here to ensure they have a pleasant and positive experience at our office.
