At Alderwood Children’s Dentistry, our mission is to help kids throughout Lynnwood, VA and the surrounding areas achieve beautiful, healthy smiles through comprehensive pediatric dental care. But in addition to the treatment we provide in our office, we strive to be a comprehensive resource for dental and oral health. The holidays are a time that can often put extra stress on tooth enamel, especially for kids – so here are a few oral care tips to help your child maintain a healthy smile through the holidays.

Holiday Oral Hygiene Tips for Kids

With candies, pies, and extra helpings on all sides, the holidays can sometimes be an onslaught of decay-causing foods for teeth. That’s why it’s extra important to maintain proper oral hygiene during the holiday season, especially for kids. Follow these simple tips to help your child maintain healthy teeth during the holiday season:

  • Ritualize Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing are the most important parts of maintaining a great smile, and it’s important to not get lazy or inconsistent during the holidays. Make a ritual out of brushing and flossing teeth with your kids both in the morning and before bed, treating it as non-negotiable family time.
  • Limit Sticky Candies: Candy is generally bad for tooth enamel, but sticky candy has the added problem of adhering to enamel and causing decay over a longer period of time. That’s why it’s always a good idea to limit the consumption of sticky treats like taffy caramels during the holidays.
  • Include Tooth-Friendly Holiday Gifts: While oral hygiene may not be the first thing on most kids’ holiday wish lists, including tooth-friendly gifts can be a great way to help your child take ownership of their oral hygiene. A new kid-focused toothbrush with their favorite characters, kid-friendly flossers, or an extra-tasty toothpaste are all great options for adding to a child’s holiday gift bag.
